Any thought or possibility of recharging the batteries via solar power arrays on the upper deck – so as to provide at least a low speed propulsion in case of loss/over consumption of diesel fuel?

With both a large battery bank and a substantive quantity of diesel fuel there is plenty of power management and get home capability. The small battery charging capability of a solar array wouldn’t be sufficient to make much difference in motive power of the submarine.
