Ann writes from Saint Martinville, Louisiana: “When should you add more insulation?
If the insulation you are asking about is fiberglass insulation, there should be no need to replace it unless the material has been damaged by water or in some other way. Fiberglass insulation continues to perform year after year. In fact, an employee found some a couple of years ago that was still performing well after 50 years in a home. The employee found Owens Corning insulation in an exterior wall while renovating her home. She sent it the company’s Science and Technology Center in Granville, Ohio, where it was tested and found to have not lost any of its thermal performance. The company has always believed its product will perform as labeled for the life of the home or structure but we’ve seldom had the opportunity to prove it. We now have 50-year-old material that we’re pretty sure is as good as it was when it was brand new.
