Anaerobes Q. How can I get the best recovery of anaerobes from my Thioglycollate Broth?
A. Inoculate Thioglycollate media all the way to the bottom of the tube where anaerobic conditions exist. Also, be careful not to agitate or invert the tube, which will cause oxygen to reach the lower area of the tube. Thioglycollate contains a small amount of agar which may appear as a white precipitate, not to be confused with growth. Consider using our Thio with Supplements (Cat. no. K23). It contains hemin and vitamin K which are required by some fastidious anaerobes. It also contains a calcium carbonate chip (CaCO3), which serves as a buffer to neutralize the build-up of harmful acids as the organisms grow, thus prolonging their viability.
