In general, retirees under age 65 may COBRA their group plan through the University to an individual policy with their current health care plan provider or may buy private insurance on their own. All retirees meeting the qualifications of the University’s retiree plan are entitled to major medical coverage. The University’s retiree insurance would pay secondary to any other insurance a retiree has until s/he becomes Medicare-eligible. Retirees are advised to examine carefully their insurance needs.
