Relative sponsorship makes no difference to IELTS requirements unless your relatives live in a designated regional area and are sponsoring you to live and work in that area. If you scored under 6 on the IELTS reading component, you are not eligible for any other class of GSM visa and that’s that. Work very hard on your reading and other English skills and apply again when you have improved your score. Don’t imagine for a moment that the IELTS requirements are set by DIAC simply to make life difficult for applicants because that is genuinely not the case. Australia is a very English oriented country and if you don’t have good English skills across the board, you are virtually unemployable in any professional field and even IELTS 6s are at the low end of what employers find acceptable. There is simply no point in encouraging skilled people to come here only to find them driving taxis or working as cleaners because they’re unable to find or keep a job in their own field.
