If the family is a practicing Muslim family, then more than sari or salwar kameez, modesty of dress important. Sari might be a nice gesture, but immigrant families in the U.S. are fairly openminded about it. As far as Aqiqa is concerned, the environment can be religious or cultural. Any gift that would be enjoyed by the girl would be appropriate. However, if you are close to the family and the girl, it is common to give jewelry, even though the girl might not be wearing it yet. Of course, in the context of the people of the Indian subscontinent, they don’t really care about the regular 10 or 14 carat gold jewelry of America.
