After two decades in fashion, what made you start Projekt ‘M?
Milind Soman and I have been part of the fashion industry for the last 23 years. When I approached him to do a shoot, he was excited by the textiles I was working with, and broached the idea of launching a textile based line of clothes together. That’s how ‘M’ kickstarted. For 10 years now, individually, and then Projekt ‘M’ as a brand, I have been working with Kalamkari which was on the verge of extinction. We have used a number of platforms to promote its appeal — fashion shows, celebrity endorsements and beauty contests. Now even other designers are working with Kalamkari! Our job was to bring it into focus, set its revival into motion and create jobs for the weavers and artisans.
