After two deaths in my family within 3 months, I couldn deal with thank you notes for nearly a year. I completed the thank yous, but some people sent memorials in the form of personal checks. Should I return the checks or use them as intended.

The only reason I would say not to use the checks is because it has been a year, and having money taken unexpectedly from their bank accounts might come as an unpleasant surprise. If you feel bad about returning them, perhaps you could add a PS to the thank you notes letting the senders know that you plan on finally using the checks.
