In 1584, the British established a colony on Roanoke Island, but by 1590 all of the colonists disappeared and to this day no one knows what happened. The London Company founded Jamestown, Virginia in 1606 but in less than a year, only 32 out of the original 105 settlers were still alive. They had faced starvation and disease.
