The Achilles tendon area is a so called watershed for several nerves, tendons and blood vessels. Thus, with all this “traffic” the area can be come irritated easily. The area is irritated most often through overuse and the most simple answer is to rest, ice and elevate the area. Cold compress with a flexible gel pack is also a good modality for decreasing the amount of healing time. I have found that proper hydration will also help to eliminate pain in the Achilles area. With more fluid in the body areas such as the Achilles area will have less viscosity and thus less friction, heat and injury. Another suggestion would be to stretch the plantar fascia along the bottom of the foot and to do a soleus and gastrocnemius stretch.
