After receiving counsel, how should applicants be expected to respond?
People receiving help from the church must be willing to follow their counselor’s recommendations, including any financial training and accompanying assignments, that the counselor recommends. That’s why the Benevolence Committee must also determine people’s willingness to make necessary changes. Sometimes people show total unwillingness to make any adjustments. When this occurs it is time to stop the counseling. There is no amount of money that can help these individuals because more money coming in to them will simply mean more going out. In addition, applicants must be willing to work. Many times, able-bodied people who are out of work aren’t willing to work, especially those who receive some type of public assistance. Unless the ministry offers access to medical care or child care, many of these people will refuse to work because they believe they have too much to lose in benefits.
