After my study abroad program has ended and my Visa has expired, can I continue to travel in the Schengen Area?
Once your Visa has expired you will have to leave Italy. If you are planning to continue to study with the same program after your Visa has expired, you will not need a new Visa, but can simply renew your Permesso di Soggiorno (Permit to Stay). You can start to work to review your Permit to Stay 30 days prior to its expiration date and you have up to 60 days to renew your Permesso after it has expired. To do so, you must have the original Permit to Stay (the receipt alone will not suffice), your original passport, the letter of acceptance from your school for the extended period of stay and basic health insurance for that same period. If you do not have the original Permesso, you must go to the Police Station where your fingerprints were taken (along with your receipt and your passport) and request the original.
