Regardless of whether the accident is investigated by the Georgia State Patrol, a city or county police department, or by a county sheriff’s department, the responding patrol officer or deputy sheriff will likely fill out and submit a “Georgia Uniform Motor Vehicle Accident Report.” Generally, anyone involved in the accident is entitled to obtain a copy of that report by simply requesting it from the police agency whose officer prepared it. Persons not involved in the accident also have a right to obtain the report pursuant to Georgia’s Open Records Act (O.C.G.A. § 50-18-70).
