After a guilty verdict in a criminal case, when does the sentencing take place?
Sentencing normally takes place several weeks after the verdict is rendered. In all cases (except murder cases in which the people are seeking the death penalty) the judge determines when the defendant s sentence will be. Jurors are not required to return to the court for the sentencing proceeding.
