Acetone is poisonous and highly flammable. So, what chemical compounds / elements that can use to stabilize it?
Acetone is not actually all that toxic: as far as I remember, it comes fairly low down in the list of toxic solvents. (I haven’t got my data books with me, as I’m writing this in a library.) Flammability is a bigger problem, though, and I remember at least one rather nasty accident from the days when I used to work in a chemistry lab. Acetone is an excellent solvent and dissolving almost any solute in acetone will reduce its vapour pressure and hence will make it less toxic and less likely to catch fire. However, the presence of the solute is likely to interfere with its effectiveness as a solvent and will almost certainly cause problems when you try to evaporate off the solvent. The best solution is to instal efficient fume extractors and to test them regularly. If there are a number of people using the acetone (in a workshop, say), they should all be trained to understand how the fume extractors work and to know which areas of the workshop are safe for the handling of acetone.
