The other answer is correct, but I’m going to add to it. There are three days due to the Jewish system of counting days. He died on Friday at three. The whole day is counted because it happened before sundown. So Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning he rose. That’s three days, and of course, the two nights in between the days. Tradition holds that he was dead for forty hours and that he rose at seven in the morning on Sunday, Easter morning. Take that as you will, but that’s the legend. Technically, looking at the timeline and assuming this is true, he was not dead for three days. But in everyday counting of days, he was dead three days and two nights.
