There are three types of messages sent out for AMBER Alerts: New, Update, and Cancel. The new message is the initial message going out. Update messages provide updates to content in the message. More often than not, an update message will be sent when they have expanded the geographical area of the search of the child. Cancel messages are sent out when the AMBER Alert is cancelled, i.e. no longer needed.
