Do it the way that I do it (I’m impatient) Pull the chain once, reach up and grab the fan blades- to stop it. Let go, if the fan starts up again you will now that its not off. Pull the chain again, reach up and stop the fan, let go – repeat until it is off.

I would just go crazy pulling at the cord until (hopefully) it decides to turn off.
