A security gate damaged our car at a gated community, who is liable to pay for the damages?

My wife was visiting a gated community as she had done in the past, normally she would push the security button to get buzzed in. But apparently they changed their policy, there was a new sign posted saying “visitor’s cannot enter this gate, go back and proceed to the main gate”. However there was no way to turn around, she would have had to back up out to the main road, which she deamed was unsafe. Then a resident drove up and opened the gate with their transponder, so she attempted to follow the resident through the gate, but it closed on her, damaging the car. They say they are not liable because she violated the posted sign. We say they are liable because their instructions were dangerous so she acted reasonably. They even agree that someone could have safety concerns about reversing.
