A Reader Asks: Can I Keep Fire Bellied Toads and Fire Bellied Newts in the Same Tank? Thursday January 29, 2009 On the surface, it may appear that fire bellied toads and fire bellied newts could share a tank as they have relatively similar needs (except that the toads need a good sized land area and the newts need lots of water). However, as with most other species, mixing these species is not a good idea, as explained in my answer to this question. In this case the results are pretty predictable, but generally it is a bad idea to mix species in a vivarium situation as putting species together in close quarters can have unpredictable and disastrous results.
