A professor has invited a non-resident alien sponsored by Harvard University to speak to his class and wants to pay them a $200 honorarium. Is this possible?
Yes however before payment can be made, the department must obtain a “release letter” from the appropriate international officer at Harvard stating that the payment is within the restrictions of their visa. Most schools or sponsoring organizations are familiar with such letters. In addition to the letter, a W8-BEN and an Alien Payment Form are required. The payment will be subject to a 30% withholding.
