A military question: Which was best–the Jeep, the M1A1 utility truck, or the HUMVEE?
I served In The Army from 1980 to 2000 the M151A2 1/4 ton 4X4 utility Truck was still in service when I was assigned to the 82nd ABN Div and had one assigned to me while I was an 11C1P (Mortar man) We used them to transport the 81mm Mortar and the 107mm (4 Deuce) mortar, I loved the Jeep, it could in between The Pine trees at Ft. Bragg that the HumVee could not and had some advantages, I loved it’s Compact features, However it was very vulnerable as you have said. The Hummer also replaced the GAMMA Goat if you recall, The Goat was a piece of Junk, and I was Glad to see it go, Loud, Noisy and to me never lived up to my expectations, always breaking down, that Loud 3 Cycl 2 cycle engine was useless. The Hummer did good to replace it. Now I drove the Hummer in Germany and in Iraq, It has far more Power and storage room than the jeep of course, and in Comparison the Hummer is better, But You know, I still miss Ole A-5 That I had in the 82nd, The name I had stenciled on it was the Millenium
