A few questions on the Vietnam War (best answer)?

Vietnam was a French colony. When the Japanese captured it in WWII, the Vietnamese started a resistance movement. When the French returned, they continued the resistance against the French. When the French gave up and left, the country became two countries- north and south Vietnam. North was influenced by the Communist Chinese and was Communist. South was a so called democratic country. The US started to send military advisors to assist the south against the communist infilrators and partisans trying to take it over. The war escalated, and when Navy ships reported being fired on (possibly just a radar mirage), Congress passed the Tonkin Gulf resolution allowing US troops to actually fight for South Vietnam as Allies. Large numbers of troops were sent. People in the US didn’t like it. They felt we were fighting a war that was not ours. “Hippies” thought all war was bad “make love not war” was the motto of the day.

It is part of the Cold War. I am not aware of the australian part of the question. It ended as a tragic defeat for the West.
