A database backup command failed, yet the command indicated success. Whats going on?

A Synergy database backup failed, reporting corruption:

Corruption found in Informix database /repo/ccmdb-6.3/ipfdb/db.

Yet the ccmdb backup command did not indicate failure (by returning a non-zero exit status) to the backupdb command. This problem was reported as Telelogic Case ID 7004821. The response: With reference to Case ID: 7004821. As per the discussion that we had yesterday for the signal or the non-zero value in the backup script there is an existing enhancement request ‘R21577’ where all ‘ccmdb’ commands should return a failure exit status in case of errors. But, unfortunately this is in the deferred state and could be considered in our future releases. We suggest you to check the backup log for the failure and act upon the message. We have several other customers who check the backup log for the failure and inconsistencies reported by the check command. It is unknown whether ccm commands are similarly unreliable with respect to exit status.
