Pet stores do not buy from reputable breeders because reputable breeders would not (and are forbidden by a Breeder’s Code of Ethics) sell to pet stores. Most puppies in pet stores come from puppy mills. Buying them saves that ONE puppy but it helps condemn his mother to a life of misery. She will be bred until she can whelp no more puppies or until her uterus pro-lapses. Either way, she will likely die of exhaustion. Also, puppies coming out of puppy mills are usually bred without regard to genetic defects. Many suffer from defects such as liver shunts, which cause a very short life and lots of vet bills for you. A final reason not to buy from pet stores is that even the best cannot NOT sell you a puppy. Consequently, puppies end up in un-suitable homes and hence in rescue or worse through no fault of their own.
