I disagree in principle with the death penalty. I don’t think it should be on the legal books as an option. That is based on the fact that I think, in general, it’s a bad thing, and some innocent men have, and do die, having been falsely convicted. That said, and I don’t know this case very well, if we have concrete evidence beyond a shadow of a doubt that this guy did these things (like DNA evidence, and the fact that it was in his yard), in this case, I’d make an exception. Unfortunately, in the law, there can be no “exceptions” – once something is in law, it sometimes is abused and used unnecessarily. That’s why I’m happy this guy is going to be executed, but the law shouldn’t have the power to exercise this ability. For similar reasons, I’m against legalizing euthanasia, even though in some cases, it might be warranted. But that’s another debate entirely.
