Family mediation is a way of resolving disputes without going to court – the parties, rather than a judge, decide the outcome It is a dispute resolution process which provides an alternative to going to court. An impartial third party – the mediator – helps both parties to reach their own decisions for arrangements for themselves, the children and any financial issues. It is voluntary and confidential. Parties discuss their issues and concerns in a safe, neutral environment and have the opportunity to improve their communication and chances of long-term co-operation, often necessary where there are children. The mediator controls the process but the parties retain control of the decisions made. Mediation is usually a less acrimonious, less stressful, quicker and cheaper method of resolving family disputes.
