He is Nelson Mandela, truly an inspiration to humanity. Born on the 18th of July 1918 in Transkei, South Africa Nelson Mandela was the son of Chief Henry Mandela of the Tembu tribe. After joining the African National congress in 1944 he was actively engaged in the resistance movement against the Ruling National Party. Nelson Mandela spear headed the fight against apartheid and is known as one of the most important and significant black leaders in South Africa. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on June 12th 1964 and spent eighteen years in jail at Robben Island prison located off Cape Town after which he was moved to Pollsmoor Prison. His fight against apartheid gained international support and he became the voice against apartheid. Refusing to compromise on his policies and beliefs Nelson Mandela refused release from prison.
