What kind of a dog would a chow chow make?
Chows are not a particularly active breed. Apartment life can suit them, if they are given enough opportunity for regularly-scheduled physical activity each day. The Chow Chow may appear to be independent and aloof for much of the day, keeping a comfortable distance from others while staying within earshot, or preferring to watch for strangers alone by the entrance. Owners still need to be prepared to take a Chow Chow for a brisk daily walk, even if they have a fenced yard, in order to meet the dog’s needs for mental and physical stimulation. While the Chow exhibits low energy for most of the day, it will crave routine time to explore and play to maintain a happy and content disposition. They rank 76th in Stanley Coren’s The Intelligence of Dogs, being of the lowest degree of working/obedience intelligence. Chows are stubborn and not easily trained. They are NOT for everyone. They have to see the groomer once a month which will cost you around $50.00 plus the tip. You can look them up on AKC.ORG for the breed standard. It’s ***** or DOG, not girl or boy. It really doesn’t matter since I’m sure that you’ll spay/neuter. They are notorious for their back legs going out due to their conformation. That surgery will cost you around $2000.00 for each leg, the TPLO surgery. I had a Chow and loved him dearly, but would never get another one. Our’s had to be put to sleep a few months ago at the age of 15. They are very aloof. Oh, and also, a lot of homeowner’s insurance companies won’t insure you with this breed of dog, along with some other breeds.
its all about the parents and how you plan to raise him/her as you will be the adoptive parents. the chow was originally bred to be well…chow so it is important in my opinion to buy from a good line because they werent thinking of temperment when the chow came into the making it was all about meat. they can be a med to lg size dog, lots of fur of course and shedding can be a problem to some they can be aggressive if not well socialized at a young age around both ppl and animals. im going to say from experience around my neighbors chow, that they are not nearly as hyper as huskys and malamutes and raised right are very laid back dogs but like all dogs they do need exercise .
