Whats an impact wrench?
~~ There are two styles of impact wrenches. One is shaped like a gun with a trigger controlling the turning action. A trigger is used to determine the direction of rotation. An alternate style, a “butterfly” impact wrench, is more compact for better access to tight spaces. It’s cylindrical in profile with a plate on the top that vaguely resembles the wings of a butterfly (these wrenches are used by mechanics, not biologists). Pressing the left or right hand side of the plate causes the drive mechanism to revolve clockwise or counterclockwise. Impact wrenches typically come in either 3/8″ or 1/2″ drive sizes, although you can also buy 3/4″ and 1″ drive impact wrenches. In general, the larger the drive the more powerful the wrench. These are square drive wrenches to which are attached black 6-sided impact sockets. The 1/2″ drive sockets typically span a range that includes larger size sockets than the 3/8″ drive. Thus, the 3/8″ drive sockets commonly span a range up to 19mm, whereas the
