How did pterosaurs originate?
The origin of pterosaurs is still an unresolved issue. The most widely accepted theory is the one mentioned here. Enough is known from the fossil record for many paleontologists to classify them as the closest relatives of dinosaurs, if not flying dinosaurs themselves (more on that below). Their immediate ancestor, however, is still unknown. The earliest pterosaurs, such as Eudimorphodon, already possessed the adaptation for flight that made them so successful. No transitional form between pterosaurs and their presumed ancestors has been recovered (yet). The closest approximation to a potential pterosaur ancestor is the “thecodont” Sharovipteryx (formerly known as Podopteryx), the remains of which were discovered in what is now Kazakhstan. This little creature sported flaps of skin that stretched between its fore and hind limbs. Another potential pterosaur ancestor is the “thecodont” Scleromochlus. This lightly built animal had small flaps of skin between the hind limbs and tail, and i
