What is COOLPIX NR (noise reduction) mode?
When the camera is set for long time exposures(1-2 seconds or more), electronic interference or noise in the form of random speckling may appear. The longer the exposure, the more this effect is apparent. This “speckled” noise may appear in images produced by all digital cameras, due to the characteristics of the CCD and the camera electronics. This can be minimized using any “noise-reduction” functionality. Image 1 Both of these images were taken under the same conditions, with a shutter speed of 8 seconds. (ISO 400) Highlighted section- Image 3. (NR OFF) Image 2 Cropped section of Image 1. Image 3 (NR ON) Image 1 has been taken with “noise-reduction” OFF, with a shutter speed of 8 seconds. Image 3 was taken under the same conditions with the same shutter speed, but with “noise-reduction” ON. The results show that the NR mode has reduced the speckled effect quite considerably, with almost zero noise in the second image. Due to the calculations involved, the time taken to store Image 3,
