What is the purpose of the YWCA?
The YWCA is a registered charity and has many purposes, although these have somewhat modified with the course of time and as legislation has made it difficult to continue with some of these purposes. “To influence girls and women to devote themselves, in united effort with all Christians, to making the will of Christ effective in human society, and to extending the Kingdom of God throughout the world”, the declared objective early in the last century, has had to be modified somewhat. In promoting the welfare of women, one primary purpose was, for example, to provide affordable accommodation for single women in places where they could feel safe. Another was to promote the interests of girls and women at a time when men reigned supreme. The YWCA sponsors all manner of social gatherings, recreational facilities and educational possibilities where women of all backgrounds and from all areas could come together and find camaraderie and friendship.
