How does NovoSeven® work?
People living with haemophilia, who have developed inhibitors to FVIII or FIX, will no longer respond to traditional replacement therapy with plasma-derived or recombinant FVIII or FIX products because the inhibitors (antibodies) against FVIII or FIX neutralise all infused replacement factor. However, NovoSeven® can bypass the need for FVIII or FIX and can specifically stimulate the blood clotting process right at the site of injury. In the normal coagulation system, activated factor VII (FVIIa) works together with other clotting factors, including FVIII and FIX to secure wound closure, the development of a strong fibrin-rich blood clot, and repair of the damaged blood vessels. People with haemophilia and inhibitors have naturally occurring FVII and minute amounts of FVIIa in their blood.
