What is Hypnosis?
• An old Phenomenon Hypnosis is quite old phenomenon used in different cultures by saints and healers. But the concept of modern psychological hypnosis was first developed in 1843 by James Braid, a Scottish physician. Prior to that Dr. Anton Mesmer of Austria also used an earlier form of trance for healing called ‘Mesmerism’, in eighteenth century. • Natural State The word hypnosis is derived from the Greek word hypnos, meaning sleep. Hence, sometimes it is defined as a means of bringing on an artificial state of sleep to the participant. In fact it is a state of reduced consciousness while one is awake. During hypnosis, the body and conscious mind remain in a very relaxed, neutral state while the subconscious mind becomes alert and receptive to suggestions. Sometimes the person under hypnosis appears to be sleeping. But it is not sleep at all. It is actually a natural state of mind induced normally in everyday living much more often than it is induced artificially.
Hypnosis is a scientifically verified and effective behavioral technology that promotes accelerated change. With hypnosis you can stimulate desired changes in your behavior and encourage emotional and physical well-being in yourself and others. Hypnosis has been shown to be effective in producing positive psychological and physiological changes in a variety of areas, including among others, smoking cessation and weight loss, stress and anxiety reduction, pain control, increased confidence and motivation, and accelerated personal development.
Hypnosis is an altered state of awareness during which our subconscious mind is more open and receptive to suggestions that are given. We drift in and out of different levels of awareness many times each day, absorbing information on a subliminal level as well as consciously. Your hypnotherapist will work with your powers of intelligence, imagination and concentration on a subconscious level to help you achieve your goals.
