OK, ignorant American. Depending on your source, Canada Day is the anniversary of the uniting of the four Providences into a single country (in 1867), a day for Canadian patriotism, or just a day to go to the pub for a drink. Asking a Canadian “what is Canada Day about?” is like asking an American “what is Independence Day?’ It’s a little rude and fairly xenophobic. Canada Day is celebrated much like the Fourth of July in the States. Fireworks, citizenship ceremonies, parades, and burgers in the park are all common. The anniversary of Canada’s birth used to be called “Dominion Day,” which is a wee bit imperialist. It was formally changed in 1982. So, raise a pint of Labatt tonight, and say the formal Loyal Toast: “Ladies and gentlemen, the Queen.
