Who conducts elections in India?
Election Commission of India (ECI) is the apex body that conducts elections in India. It was established on January 25, 1950. ECI is an autonomous, quasi-judiciary constitutional body created to conduct free and fair elections to representative bodies in India. Under Article 324 of the Constitution of India, the ECI, is vested with the power of superintendence, direction and control of conducting the elections to the offices of President, Vice-President, both houses of Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) and both houses of State Legislature (Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council). Local body elections (also called Municipal Elections in cities) are conducted by the respective State Election Commissions. The State Election Commissions were constituted under the Constitution (Seventy-third and Seventy-fourth) Amendments Act, 1992 for each State/Union Territory, and are vested with the powers of conduct of elections to the Municipal Corporations, Muncipalities, Zilla Parishads,
