Who was Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin ?
Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852) He was trained as a draughtsman under his father the French draughtsman drawing gothic churches for use as illustrations in books. He later became the leader of the reformed gothic movement. In 1827 was employed to design furniture to be made by Morel & Seddon for Windsor Castle. In 1835 Charles Barry the newly appointed architect for the new Houses of Parliament employed Pugin to work on the buildings at the age of just 16 yrs. The new House of Parliament commission was won by Barry, the structural and site organisation by done by Barry but the gothic interior and decorations including furniture were designed by Pugin.
