Who is Gustav Holst?
Gustav Holst is a classical composer best-known for his orchestral suite, The Planets. It was first performed in the autumn of 1918. History Gustav Holst was born in Chletenham, Gloucestershire, in western England. He was brought up in a family that was focused on music. He learned to play the organ and played for local churches. He then decided to take up playing the trombone.
How does his piece “The Planets” relate to astronomy and mythology? How does Holst use musical elements to portray the title of each piece? How can you (the student) use music to portray the characteristics of a planet? Key Knowledge and Skills Students will Acquire: The students will learn about Gustav Holst and his piece “The Planets”. The students will be able to state how music and science can relate. The students will know basic music terms. The students will be able to develop criteria to evaluate their music creation for their powerpoint. Assessment Plan: A listening guide will be filled out as a full group for the seven planets. Students will develop a set of criteria that they will use to evaluate the effectiveness of the music they deveop for their powerpoint. Tropical Storm Gustav became Hurricane Gustav on August 26, 2008. Gustav, the third hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season, started as a category one storm, making landfall around on August 26 close to the capital Port-au-Prince. 23 people died from the storm in Haiti. On August 27, the storm was downgraded to a tropical storm, but is expected to regain strength to at least a category two hurricane. It reached Jamaica on August 28 and had killed at least 70 people in the Caribbean as of August 29. Gustav is heading towards the Gulf Coast, predicted to reach it on September 1, 2008.
