Who is Olympia Snowe?
She’s a Republican senator from Maine who is 61 years old, 17 years older than Sarah Palin. She was elected as a state representative in 1973, when Palin was 9 years old (and to be fair, when Barack Obama was 12 years old). She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978, and to the Senate in 1994. Olympia Snowe would not have been a crowd-stirring vice-presidential candidate in the style of Sarah Palin, but she always has worked with political peers on both sides of the aisle, similar to McCain but with a more quiet presence. In fact, this quality may have been the reason why McCain ruled her out as a vice-presidential nominee. Unlike Sarah Palin, Olympia Snowe would not have been acceptable to conservative Republicans.
