Michael Phelps is mainly known as one of the best swimmers in history. As of July 2009 Michael Phelps had won more Olympic medals then any other Olympian in history with16 careerOlympic medals. He won 8 gold medals at the Bejing Olympics in 2008 and won 6gold and 2 bronze medals at the Athens Olympics in 2004. He also currently has 37 world records (29 individual, 8 relay) as of August 2009 (2009 -08-02)^[update]. Michael Phelps has set more records than any other swimmer. He currently holds six worldrecords.

In February 2009 Michael Phelps was suspended from competition for three months byUSA Swimming after the scandal related to the photo that showed him inhaling from a marijuana pipe. Swimming’s national governing body also cut off financial support to Phelps for the same three-month period.
