What is a mustang?
In the Navy, a Mustang is an Officer who has promoted up from the ranks of Navy enlisted personnel through an in-service procurement program, with no interruption of his/her active duty status. It is also understood that the Mustang Officer was a career Sailor, and normally wears one or more Good Conduct Medals. Thus, the Navy Mustang is either a Navy Limited Duty Officers (LDO), a Chief Warrant Officers (CWO), or commissioned through the Direct Fleet Accession, Seaman to Admiral (S2A) program, or through the Enlisted Commissioning Program. In the past, there were other programs leading to a commission, such as NESEP, or the Naval Flight Officer program, but these have since gone away. LDO’s and CWO’s are a very unique part of the Naval service. The LDO or CWO serves in a role like no other commissioned officer can. The term “Mustang” refers to the wild horses that roam the ranges of the western United States. The Mustang is not a breed but rather a mixture of many breeds that have co-mingled over many years. Swift, sure-footed, tough, and intelligent, Mustangs weigh from 600 to 1000 pounds and are well suited for the rugged conditions of life on the western ranges. These wild horses are descendants of animals that escaped from or were released by Spanish explorers, ranchers, miners, soldiers, and Native Americans. In the mid-seventeenth century they numbered between two and four million. Today, only about 50,000 survive. This drastic reduction in their numbers was due in part to the “mustangers” who rounded up wild horses and sent them to slaughter. After a nationwide grassroots effort to protect these magnificent creatures, Congress passed the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act in 1971 which states: “..wild free roaming horses..are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West

Whats more amazing is when Microsoft word corrects the spelling of words like Kleenex. The ford mustang car has become a great status symbol in North America. At the moment however, the ford company seems to be in jeopardy and the future of the ford mustang uncertain. After a hundred or so years in the business, Fords had its moment in the spotlight.
