What is a white cedar tree?
The red cedars of our eastern regions lift their lofty spires to a height of 37 feet. The splendid white cedar may grow to 50 feet. It sets its deep roots into the moist soil of the northwestern mountains and in the thick forests of Oregon and Washington: Its feathery foliage spreads in flat, fan shaped twigs of pale, yellow green: A grown white cedar looks like a tapered Christmas tree intended for an outdoor party of giants. Handsome cedars of various kinds grow in all of our evergreen forests and many of them are pampered in parks and gardens. White cedars of a smaller kind often grow in our eastern forests and may be planted in sturdy windbreaks: smooth and durable White Cedar wood is used in building to make sidings and shingles.
