What is the USGA doing to attract more players to the game?
F.R.: Most adults who have an interest in sports know about golf. In 1996, the USGA committed to invest $50 million over a 10-year period in programs that bring golf to nontraditional audiences. Through this program, “For the Good of the Game,” the USGA is helping programs that teach juniors, minorities, seniors, women and people with disabilities. The goal is to get them in the game and help them learn to play, then to keep them in the game and provide access. The USGA has good partners in this effort, such as The First Tee, the USGA/LPGA Girls’ Golf programs, and the NGCOA’s Kids on Course program. Editor’s Note: At the request of the NGCOA board of directors, the USGA is developing a document, which will outline the criteria used in site selection for qualifiers and championships. NGCOA members will soon be able to access this document through the USGA and the NGCOA.
