What does expat mean?

It’s short for Expatriate. It means someone living outside his/her own country. Think Marbella.

It is an abbreviation of expatriate, from the Latin “expatriatus”, which has the meaning of living in (as opposed to merely visiting) a foreign land. In other words, exiles. In modern parlance it is normally applied to people who live abroad from choice.

Ex-patriot. Used to indicate a national of your country who works abroad legally and without applying for asylum. Literally it should mean someone who is no longer a patriot, but my experience is that British-expats are some of the most patriotic, if not downright jingoistic, right-wing people I have ever met.
