Why go away to college?
“Why go here when you’re from here?” is the one question that I hear almost immediately when I tell people I am a native of Norfolk. Personally, I chose to attend Norfolk State because I believed that I would receive a quality education that would prepare me for the world…and my familiarity with the university made the decision even easier. However, I wondered why other natives of Norfolk attended Norfolk State. During my interviews, I mostly received simple answers like “It’s cheaper and closer to home,” said sophomore Adam Callahan. Junior Andrew Smith said “My parents didn’t think I was ready to go away to college.” One of the better responses I heard came from one of my classmates. Danielle Coley said “I chose Norfolk State because, in my opinion, it exhibited what a university should stand for.
