A. In 1992, a majority of Bosniaks and Croatians voted to create an independent Bosnia and Herzegovina. That angered Yugoslavia’s President, Slobodan Milosevic, a Serb. He wanted to keep Bosnia and Serbia together as Yugoslavia. Bosnian Serbs took up arms against their fellow Bosnians. Bosnian Serbs, and later Croats, tried to create ethnically pure mini-states by killing or expelling other ethnicities. About 100,000 of Bosnia’s people were killed during the war. Another 1.8 million were driven from their homes. In December 1995, a U.S.-brokered peace treaty was signed in Dayton, Ohio, ending the war.
