Lucerne is lovely (especially if you like tourists, but even so…). If you’re going on a clear day, I recommend that you NOT take the fastest train (IR or IC) because it mostly goes through tunnels and you miss the Zurich lake. Take the S8 to Thalwil, then the S28 to Zug, and from there whichever train tales you to Lucerne (I don’t think there are any more tunnels). Pilatus or a boat trip are good suggestions. I also suggest a walk along the city wall.
