What is WDM?
WDM Windows Driver Model has been introduced by Microsoft to standardize device driver development for desktop Windows operating systems like Windows 98, Windows NT and so forth. (Windows CE doesn’t support WDM). In the past device vendors had to deliver a device driver for each Windows system with their hardware and the user has to install the proper device driver for his system. With WDM device driver developers develop only one device driver for all Windows based operating systems, which lets users to deal with less problems during hardware installations. WDM also organizes the way the device drivers act, and introduces well defined interfaces known as class drivers. This way many hardware vendors develop their hardware according to these descriptions, so that no additional software installation is necessary for their new hardware. Wavelength-division multiplexing or WDM is a signaling process that employs the use of laser technology as part of the communication protocol. The essentials of this process include the combination of several signals that are carried along laser beams. Each of the signals are set a different wavelengths and are transmitted using fiber optics. Specialized filters at the point of reception help to convert the laser driven multiplexing signals into a form that can be processed into a workable signal. While somewhat similar in nature to frequency-division multiplexing processes, wavelength-division multiplexing does not make use of standard radio frequencies to configure the various signals. Instead, the method will translate the signals into infrared wavelengths that are all part of the electromagnetic spectrum. WDM is the new Windows Driver Model from Microsoft, which brings device driver binary compatibility between Windows NT and Windows 98. WDM incorporates plug and play, power management, and advanced bus management into a subset of the Windows NT device driver model. The new Plug and Play architecture, encompassing “Ready to Run” and “Hot Swapping”, provides for the dynamic detection of devices being inserted or removed from the system while it is operational, and notifying the appropriate device drivers, and possibly applications, that a device has been added or removed from the system. Two new external bus standards Universal Serial Bus (USB) and IEEE 1394 support hot plugging (also called as Hot Swapping).
