What is a Hipster?

In recent weeks, some have defined it as a young person who buys American Apparel, but doesn’t want the store in their neighborhood. But I’m not sure, and now American Apparel has been spurned. Still, as a 19-year-old born in St. Petersburg, Russia, the whole controversy makes me wonder. I associate the word with the nihilist youth—adding a dash of passion—from Ivan Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons. When I defined it in class as someone with a beard who wears chunky, black-rimmed glasses and has a huge swab of curly hair, everyone laughed. So I decided to cruise Valencia and find out for myself. What do they wear? What do they buy? Do hipsters want to be called hipsters? Jim from Aquarius Records says that for a hipster, the “fixed-gear bicycle [is a] particular badge of honor that is worn,” and that a hipster has an “enjoyment of fine coffee.” However, he’s weary of the reality of a hipster and says the “belief that it exists” makes it real. Hipster can be a confusing term, since it has several meanings when discussing counterculture trends. One meaning connects back to the jazz movement of the 1940s through the early 1960s and before the term hippie was popularized. Another definition references a more modern use of the term hipster, as it might be used in common language today. Initially the words hipster, hip, hep, and hepster might all have been used to describe certain folks who emulated a certain type of lifestyle, particularly connected to jazz music and the musicians who performed it. Special kinds of slang were used, and people who described themselves as hipsters tended to be sexually promiscuous, interested in using marijuana, and in general promoting a lifestyle that was easy going, relaxed and unrelated to the main culture. It’s thus considered a counterculture movement. Some hipsters were specifically interested in jazz, but yet another definition was added with the writings of Beat Poets. In particular, Jack

A hipster is a type of person. Usually in their college years to late 20s, very fashion conscious and trendy. Currently the term applies mostly to the “indie rock” crowd who sport sleeve tattoos, drink over priced coffees, and lattes and once cheap over looked domestic beers like PBR and Schlitz. They tend to have expensive “bed head” haircuts and wear ironic t-shirts and clothing accessories like large western belt buckles and wear beards if they are male. They are known for moving into in low income and often dangerous, high crime neighborhoods where they tend to overpay for rent which causes the rental prices in areas that they move into to sky rocket.

A ByronCrawford.com Special Report A few weeks ago Hashim, who’s always on top of these things, posted something on his site about a group of people known as “hipsters” who have been throwing some rather interesting parties in New York City, where they’re from. Of course, I was intrigued and so I set out to learn more about them. But then I couldn’t find very much useful information on them, most likely because this is a fairly new phenomenon that has yet to spread outside the self-proclaimed Center of the Universe. So I spent the last week or so doing research on the hipster movement, which I present here as a resource. I may also try to have this added to the Wikipedia or, failing that, the Urban Dictionary. HIPSTER FASHION While there are, of course, many different facets to the hipster lifestyle, perhaps none is more important than the hipster sense of fashion. In fact, you could say the entire hipster lifestyle is based around fashion and you’d be more or less right. This handy ch
